While the medical and physical needs may subside after active treatment, the psychological, social, and spiritual effects of a breast cancer diagnosis may last for life, for both a survivor and their loved ones. In fact, fears of a relapse or metastasis can linger for the rest of breast cancer survivors’ lives. We’ve heard many survivors report that they are constantly waiting for “the other shoe to drop.”
But breast cancer patients and survivors aren’t the only ones who suffer from the mental health effects of a breast cancer diagnosis. Family members also suffer. Partners, spouses, children, and caregivers for breast cancer patients may also suffer depression and other mood disorders during and for years after treatment.
Forge is here to help with the emotional and mental effects of a breast cancer diagnosis. We contract with Oasis Counseling for Women and Children to provide free, professional mental health counseling for Alabama breast cancer patients, survivors, their families and loved ones from the day of diagnosis through the rest of life.
